GH

Geoffrey Hartley

Retired, Chiang Mai (originally UK)

I spent years avoiding the whole subject because I found it so difficult to follow. After one session at Quietharbor, I finally understood enough to have a sensible conversation with an independent financial adviser back in the UK. Margaret did not tell me what to do — she just made it comprehensible, which was all I needed.

Semi-retired teacher, Nimman area

The Paperwork Sorting service was worth every baht. I had documents in three different folders, two boxes, and a drawer that I had not opened in two years. David worked through everything methodically and the summary sheet he produced has already saved me from missing a renewal. Very calm, very professional.

Robert Brennan

Long-term resident, Irish national

A straightforward service. I attended one of the small group sessions and found it genuinely useful — the glossary in particular. My only small note is that I would have appreciated slightly more time on the section about overseas provisions, but Nattaya was helpful when I followed up by email afterwards.

Patricia Thorne

Retired nurse, Chang Khlan

I have been on the Ongoing Organisation Plan since the beginning of the year. Having someone keep track of my documents and flag upcoming dates has removed a surprising amount of low-level anxiety. I do not have to remember things anymore — I just know they are in order. That is genuinely valuable.

James Muir

Early retiree, Australian expat

Good session, honest advice about what they could and could not help with. The fact that they pointed me toward separate professional help rather than trying to cover everything themselves actually built my confidence in them. Competent and sensibly scoped.

Helen Kovacs

Returning resident, Chiang Mai

I came back to Chiang Mai after five years away and everything had shifted slightly. The session gave me a clear picture of what I needed to revisit and what was still in order. Nattaya was very patient and the follow-up glossary has been sitting on my desk since the appointment.

In More Detail

A Closer Look at Three Client Situations

Names changed for privacy. Details are representative of the kinds of situations we encounter regularly.

"I did not know what I had or where anything was"

Paperwork Sorting Service — Chiang Mai

The Situation

A retired couple had accumulated 15 years of important documents across multiple folders, envelopes, and a shared email account. They were planning to spend extended time in Europe and wanted to feel confident their affairs were in order before leaving.

What We Did

A single Paperwork Sorting appointment lasting around three hours. Documents were laid out, grouped, and indexed together. A one-page summary was produced listing each document category and its renewal or review date where applicable.

The Outcome

The couple identified two documents that were closer to expiry than they had realised, giving them time to act before departure. They described the appointment as one of the most practically useful things they had done in years of living in Thailand.

"The terminology made no sense to me"

Understanding Your Options Session — Chiang Mai

The Situation

A woman in her early 60s had received a written summary from an adviser back home but could not follow the language well enough to feel confident about the choices described. She wanted to understand what she was actually being asked to decide.

What We Did

A one-to-one session of around 90 minutes, walking through the key concepts mentioned in her adviser's document. We did not comment on the specific options suggested — we explained what the terms meant and how those types of arrangements generally work.

The Outcome

She returned to her adviser with a clear list of follow-up questions, felt she could now participate meaningfully in the conversation, and later told us she had reached a decision she was comfortable with. We received a brief thank-you note three weeks later.

"Things kept slipping through the cracks"

Ongoing Organisation Plan — Chiang Mai

The Situation

A single retiree, healthy and active but not particularly interested in administrative tasks, kept missing small deadlines — a membership renewal here, a document update there. Nothing catastrophic, but the accumulation was causing quiet stress.

What We Did

Initial sorting appointment followed by monthly check-ins over one season. New documents were added and logged as they arrived. Advance notice was given for any date-sensitive items approximately four weeks ahead.

The Outcome

No missed renewals across the three-month period. At the end-of-season review, the client chose to continue for a second season. "It is just nice to know someone is keeping an eye on it" was how they put it — which is, more or less, exactly the point.
